It was April 1999 when the first issue of <\/strong>our newspaper <\/strong>\u039c\u0391\u039d\u0399\u0391\u03a4\u0399\u039a\u0397<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0391\u039b\u039b\u0397\u039b\u0395\u0393\u0393\u03a5\u0397<\/strong> (MANIOT SOLIDARITY)<\/strong> was published<\/strong>.<\/strong> <\/strong>Timidly and through trial and error,<\/strong> we tried to find the <\/strong>path that would give shape to the impulse<\/strong> <\/strong>which led<\/strong> us to this form of expression<\/strong>.<\/strong> Our vision<\/strong> <\/strong>for a Mani of the future worthy of our heroic ancestors was particularly strong<\/strong>.<\/strong> <\/strong>Thus,<\/strong> the many <\/strong>diverse<\/strong> obstacles were gradually overcome \u2014 starting <\/strong>with<\/strong> technical matters<\/strong>,<\/strong> passing through financial difficulties<\/strong>,<\/strong> and culminating in th<\/strong>e challenges <\/strong>that required rapid adaptation to modern printing technology<\/strong>.<\/strong> Year by year we acquired the necessary know-how which<\/strong>,<\/strong> combined with the personal processing of source material<\/strong>,<\/strong> resulted in the form and content of the newspaper you now hold in your hands<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our main <\/strong>objective began with<\/strong> the idea that Mani is not <\/strong>just<\/strong> a place<\/strong>,<\/strong> but a way of life<\/strong>.<\/strong> <\/strong>It is a<\/strong> way of life that those of us from an older generation acquired through the experiences of our upbringing<\/strong>; we ca<\/strong>rry <\/strong>it <\/strong>in our genes<\/strong> and <\/strong>pass it on to our descendants<\/strong>.<\/strong> This way of life is recorded in every issue of this publication<\/strong>,<\/strong> accumulat<\/strong>ing<\/strong> issue by issue<\/strong>,<\/strong> condensed into our book publications<\/strong>,<\/strong> pro<\/strong>ject<\/strong>ed on our website<\/strong>,<\/strong> and digitally<\/strong> archived<\/strong> so <\/strong>that it<\/strong> remain<\/strong>s<\/strong> available for future <\/strong>generation<\/strong>s<\/strong>.<\/strong> This content also contributes to the harmonious integration into our land of the many new residents who have settled in our villages <\/strong>in<\/strong> recent decades<\/strong>,<\/strong> just as <\/strong>it happened<\/strong> during the great population <\/strong>integratio<\/strong>ns <\/strong>in the Mani region<\/strong> in earlier centuries<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of entering the 28th year of publication,<\/strong> we consider it appropriate to analyse in greater detail the structure and content of each issue of our newspaper.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The smooth transition from the title to the content is achieved through the lead article on the first<\/strong> page<\/strong>.<\/strong> We ensure that its content incorporates elements and nuances of SOLIDARITY<\/strong> in analyses of ideas and events relating to broader social issues appearing in current affairs.<\/strong> The first page is complemented by news closely connected to our region,<\/strong> its developmental progress,<\/strong> or the major milestones of its historical journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics featured on pages 2<\/strong>,<\/strong> 3<\/strong>,<\/strong> 4 and 10 <\/strong>highlight elements from the history,<\/strong> folklore,<\/strong> nature and culture of our region,<\/strong> as these have been recorded in the past and continue to evolve to the present day.<\/strong> Special emphasis is given to the “Farewell” of the first Maniot scholar and enlightener Nikitas Nifakis,<\/strong> which is featured consistently in the masthead of page 3 as a timeless mandate for all of us,<\/strong> and his reflections on our region are expanded through the presentation of his verse compositions in successive issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pages 6 and 7<\/strong> have been dedicated to showcasing developmental projects being promoted in our wider region,<\/strong> identifying the manner of their implementation and the weaknesses that emerge during the course of their realisation until completion.<\/strong> Pages 5 and 12 <\/strong>cover opinion articles that also echo the ideas of SOLIDARITY<\/strong>,<\/strong> as these relate to current events and situations.<\/strong> Pages 9 and 11<\/strong> are dedicated to recording brief news items concerning our wider region,<\/strong> as they appear in the current affairs of each month.<\/strong> As our perceptive readers will have noticed,<\/strong> police reports have been entirely absent even from the very first issue of the publication,<\/strong> because material of this nature does not align with the aims of our newspaper and our association.<\/strong> Believing<\/strong> that the printed word remains a quiet reminder that thought requires time and responsibility and that information requires <\/strong>verification,<\/strong> we maintain <\/strong>this editorial approach <\/strong>which we have followed for 27 years<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On our website www<\/strong>.<\/strong>maniatiki<\/strong>.<\/strong>gr<\/strong> a selected portion of the material from our printed newspaper is uploaded each month,<\/strong> while important texts with historical-geographical information about Mani and the settlements of its three large regions have been included.<\/strong> The publication of the main editorials in English facilitates compatriots (descendants of second and third generation immigrants) in becoming acquainted with the region of their family’s origin,<\/strong> as well as foreign residents who have settled in our area.<\/strong> The inclusion of the listings entrusted to us by local professionals for the printed issue increases the visibility of their businesses and activities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We believe that a strong impetus for advancing the goals of our non-profit association that publishes the newspaper \u039c\u0391\u039d\u0399\u0391\u03a4\u0399\u039a\u0397 \u0391\u039b\u039b\u0395\u039b\u0395\u0393\u0393\u03a5\u0397 also arises from the publication of books and illustrated volumes about our region.<\/strong> We note in particular the following four titles:<\/strong> PAGES FROM THE HISTORY OF MANI (in two volumes),<\/strong> TRAVEL ITINERARIES IN MANI (in two volumes),<\/strong> MANI IN FOREIGN-LANGUAGE BIBLIOGRAPHYand MANI: <\/strong>THE <\/strong>TIMELESS EVOLUTION OF 10 MAJOR REGIONS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion of this anniversary<\/strong>,<\/strong> <\/strong>supported <\/strong>by the trust and loyalty of our subscribers<\/strong>,<\/strong> we wish to express our determination to continue this work for as long as our physical and intellectual capacities permit<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
